The Plant Proton Pump

A plant cell's plasma membrane is studded with the H⁺-ATPase (AHA2) — a proton pump that drives H⁺ out of the cell, energising the membrane for nutrient uptake. Ten helices thread the lipid bilayer while a large motor domain hangs down into the crowded cytoplasm.
